Michigan coach John Beilein announced sophomore forward Mitch McGary is out for Friday’s season opener against UMass Lowell. Beilein didn’t announce who will start and where but did elaborate on the redshirt situation for freshman forward Mark Donnal.

ANN ARBOR—Michigan coach John Beilein announced Thursday that sophomore forward Mitch McGary is officially out for the Wolverines season opener Friday night against UMass Lowell.

“He’s progressing well,” Beilein said. “And that’s the update. He’s really doing well but we’re really, cautiously, just bringing him along slowly.”

Sophomore Spike Albrecht and freshman Derrick Walton each received a start at point guard in the exhibition season. Heading into Friday’s tip at Crisler Center Beilein wasn’t yet ready to reveal who will get the start at the point, or any other position for that matter.

“I think we got a good starting lineup,” Beilein said.

Asked to elaborate further Beilein said, “We’ll have to keep the suspense up but I like our starting lineup.”

Michigan will raise their Final Four banner prior to their 7 p.m. tip-off and although the moment will be special and recognition for a remarkable run through the NCAA tournament, Beilein hopes the distraction serves as a good lesson moving forward.

“They could get overhyped,” Beilein said. “I think that’s happened before but actually you’ve got to get used to that because you’re going to have a big national television game, you’re going to have senior night, you’re going to have championship games for tournaments -- you’ve got to be willing to really get up for a game, get your mind right and be able to execute without too much emotion.”

Other notes

Michigan freshman forward Mark Donnal playing sparingly in the Wolverines two preseason tune ups displaying an ability to stretch the floor with his jump shot.

Still uncertain as to whether or not Donnal will redshirt this year, Beilein believes a decision will be made in time.

“It’s all based on practice, really, based on need,” Beilein said. “We talked about it the last couple of days, he’s really had some good practices too.

“You’re not going to make that determination now. You’re just not going to burn it now and it could be a Caris (LeVert) situation where if we feel we need him down the way but he’s made some great leaps in the last week that you got to think about it.”
