DETROIT – Detroit Cass Tech took another step towards winning its third straight Division 1 state title last Friday night, as Cass beat rival Detroit (Mich.) King 20-14 in the Detroit Public School League Title game at Ford Field.
The Technicians (9-0) used a strong run game behind 2015 four-star DE/OT Joshua Alabi all night to help them secure win over King (7-1), and won their first PSL title since 2010.
"It feels good," Alabi said. "because my freshman year we didn't win it, we lost to (Detroit) Crockett. And then my sophomore year we lost to King and got blew out. So I knew my junior year I had to come out and just to play. I just didn't want to lose to King two years straight."
At 6-foot-4, 240-pounds, Alabi will most likely play on the defensive side of the ball in college, but played most of the game against King on the offensive line. He said if the Technicians are going to win another state title, then their offensive front is going to have to play better in the postseason down the stretch.
"It's really on the offensive line to pick ourselves up ," Alabi said. "I'm just going to work with the offensive line, because if we're going to win another one, that's what I need to do. The defensive line is straight right now."
Currently, Alabi has notable offers from Tennessee, Michigan State and Michigan, among others. And he has made it no secret that the Volunteers are leaders for his college services. He said he planning a trip to see the Vols' in action on Nov. 9, along with fellow teammates Mike Weber and Donovan Peoples-Jones.
"I just want to have fun, talk to the coaches, meet some more of the players and just have a good time," Alabi said.
"Tennessee is my No. 1. But after that, I really love Michigan. I really love Michigan State. I love Ohio State. I love Wisconsin. So like, it's kind of a tossup."
Alabi said he has upcoming visits to Michigan State and Michigan.
As far as what Alabi is looking for on his future visits, he said, "I just want to talk to the coaches a lot and see where they want to put me at. I want to talk to the players and see how they like up there. And if it's a good choice."
