Devin Gardner's late season showing at quarterback in 2012 has earned him consideration for a few of college football's most prestigious honors. That feat is rendered even more impressive when one considers he spent the first eight games of the season at wide receiver, hauling in 16 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns.
Gardner lined up under center in his final five contests, completing 75/126 passes for 1219 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He also rushed 47 times for 101 yards and seven touchdowns.
Gardner accounted for at least two touchdowns in each of his five starts at quarterback last season and earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors twice.
As the fulltime starter in 2013 he will be up for the 77th Maxwell award, which goes to the nation's most outstanding football player. Its watch-list will narrow to a list of semifinalists on October 29th before dwindling down to three finalists on November 18th. The victor will be announced on December 12th on the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
Gardner is also in the running for the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the nation's most outstanding quarterback. The watch list will narrow to 16 semifinalists on November 4th and three finalists on November 25th.
The victor will be announced on December 12th on the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
