Interest in Winston on the Rise

Cassius Winston

The buzz about U of D Jesuit freshman Cassius Winston has gotten louder in recent months. With more attention coming his way is a leaderboard beginning to emerge?

Cassius Winston established himself as one of the top freshmen in the state of Michigan.  Now that AAU season is underway he is establishing himself as one of the top freshmen in the country.  The U of D Jesuit star’s ability to balance his own offense with that of his teammates was on full display in Ft. Wayne a few weeks back.  With his team trailing down the stretch, Winston took over.

“When you’re down by a couple points and the team’s not scoring… I had to take the lead,” he said confidently.  “I had to put a couple buckets in.”

It was yet another example of this talented youngster’s precocious floor game.  His high I.Q. and fearless mentality.

“High school season went better than I expected,” Winston stated.  “I thought people were going to be bigger and stronger but I was able to adjust easy. It wasn’t that hard. Nothing rattles me. Nothing fazes me so I play my game at all times. [I play] slow motion and just get the job done.”

Needless to say, Winston’s outstanding play has caused the attention from college coaches to kick into high gear.

"We have Michigan, Michigan State, Georgetown, Xavier (showing interest)," reported Winston. "I’ve got an offer from U Mass, Iowa State, Colorado, and then Ohio State showed some interest, Iowa showed some interest, and since the season ended I think Xavier and Georgetown (are showing interest)."

John Beilein and Bacari Alexander both made it out to see Winston during his frosh campaign, and he returned the favor by making his way to Crisler Arena.  The Wolverines made it clear that even at this early stage the young floor general is a major priority.  His message back was the interest is definitely mutual.

“I like Michigan,” Winston stated. “It’s a point guard dominant team. Screen and rolls. The coaching staff, they all support you. They make sure you take care of your books and everything. They had great season. I was a Michigan fan throughout the whole tournament.”

That said, Winston is currently a fan of a number of his suitors.  He doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.

“I can’t even pick sides right now,” he said.  “I’m just taking it all in while it lasts. I’m looking for a school probably point guard dominant. The point guard controls the tempo and the pace.  And (I’m also looking) a great coaching staff.”
