Michigan coach John Beilein, normally busy with recruiting during the summer time, will now have the responsibility of being an assistant coach for the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games this July.
Announced Tuesday afternoon, Michigan coach John Beilein has been named an assistant coach for the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games this upcoming July.
Beilein joins Davidson coach Bob McKillop who will lead Team USA, as well as South Carolina coach Frank Martin who will serve as an assistant alongside Beilein.
This is not Beilein’s first experience with USA Basketball. In 2009, Beilein assisted in on court duties for the USA Men’s U19 World Championship and USA World University Games training camp.
Training camp for the 2013 team will be held June 24-July 1 before the games begin on July 7 and end July 16 in Kazan, Russia. A full list of invitees between the ages of 17 and 24 will be released this spring, all of who will be competing to earn a spot on the final 12-man roster.
Beilein is excited to be a part of the competition that is held every other year, put on by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
"I am honored to have been selected to be an assistant coach for USA Basketball this summer at the World University Games," said Beilein in a statement. "I look forward to working with head coach Bob McKillop and Frank Martin in our quest for a gold medal. It is a great opportunity to grow as a coach while also representing the United States of America."
Michigan’s individual skills camp is scheduled for June 25-28 and team camp slated for June 28-30, a huge recruiting tool for the Wolverines as several potential recruits make their way to campus and are allowed to be coached by the entire coaching staff.
July is also a live period for college coaches to travel to AAU events in order to be seen and evaluate prospects from all over the country.
