Something that didn’t appear possible after Michigan’s loss at Penn State a week ago Wednesday is now here. The Wolverines control their own destiny once again and are eager to take on Indiana Sunday afternoon for a piece of the Big Ten. **With Coach B video**
Just one year ago as the wintery weather was beginning to melt away in place of green landscape and sunny skies, the Michigan basketball team was at the mercy of the powers that be in the Big Ten, much like the relationship between mother nature and the disgruntled ‘shovelers’ finishing up the driveway.
The Wolverines could only control what they could control meaning a road victory at Penn State provided a glimmer of hope that the banner now hanging inside Crisler Center would read “2011-12 Big Ten Champions.” Doing their part Michigan arrived back in Ann Arbor just in time to catch the final minutes of Michigan State and Ohio State’s game in East Lansing. A Buckeye win meant the celebration could begin while a Michigan State win meant, well -- champions wouldn’t be walking through the William Davidson Player Development Center.
Fortunately for Michigan, Ohio State senior William Buford knocked down a long, fading, long, two-point shot in the closing seconds to lift the Buckeyes and oddly enough, the Wolverines, to a conference championship.
Now in 2013, wrapping up a Big Ten season for the ages with elite teams coming to town on a nightly basis, the shoe is on the other foot. If Indiana wins, they’re outright champions. If Michigan wins, not only do they claim a piece of the title, so too could Michigan State and Ohio State.
“Isn’t that ironic?” said Michigan coach John Beilein Friday. “That Ohio State will be rooting for Michigan like Michigan was rooting for Ohio State last year.
“The positions have flipped and there’s obviously a lot riding on it. We’re just going to do our best. That’s it.”
Indiana presents many challenges for Michigan. One key difference between the Wolverines loss in Bloomington on February 2nd and the game Sunday at 4pm/EST on CBS will be the resurgence of junior center Jordan Morgan. Indiana sophomore Cody Zeller was a monster on the offensive glass grabbing four of them with a few resulting in highlight reel dunks. Playing only two minutes against the Hoosiers in round one, Morgan’s role in round two will be vastly different.
“The angles are so important for a five man and while Mitch and Jon and Max are still learning all of those angles, Jordan has them down pretty good,” said Beilein. “He makes people score over him without giving up drop off dunks.
“His angles and his talk, he’s just a second ahead of the other guys on a screen coming.”
