The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Payne said Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Virginia and Maryland are the schools that jump out in his mind, but he does not have any leaders and he is yet to trim his list.
Also, Payne said Ohio State, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, Florida State, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt are the school showing him the most interest but he is talking to plenty of other schools as well.
"I'm just keeping everything open right now," Payne said. "I'm not even sure yet (when to decide). At first, I was planning on deciding right before my senior season, but I don't think that's going to happen. I still want to take some more visits to schools. I don't want to make a decision to soon.
"I want to make a decision early, but I want to make the decision at the right time."
Payne visited Maryland for its first spring practice Saturday, and he is looking at a few visits to SEC and ACC schools in the coming month.
"I'm going to Tennessee March 16," Payne said. "It was going to be March 9, but I have the SATs that day. I'm going down to Vanderbilt. I don't know what day yet, but I'm going down there with (Friendship Collegiate) coach (Aazaar) Abdul-Rahim. I also want to go down to Clemson as well, but I haven't made a date yet."
And he said the message from the coaches is often the same.
"They say I'm just a straight-up baller," Payne said. "I can play off (a receiver). I have good technique. I have good speed and nobody is going to run past me, and I'm pretty physical."
Payne, who transferred from H.D. Woodson, said there are particular things he is looking for from his recruitment.
"I'm looking at the coaching staff, the whole atmosphere, what kind of place it is outside of the campus," Payne said. "I'm looking at academics, and what schools have a good program in what I want to major in."
Payne added early time is "very, very important" in his decision.
