His Recruiting Story
Ponderosa (Parker, Colo.) offensive guard Chris Fox is Michigan's only recruit from West of the Mississippi river. The Scout.com No.6 offensive guard chose the Wolverines' last February with a special family member in mind who lives in the Wolverine state.
"Honestly, it's been Michigan pretty much the whole way," Fox said last February when he committed. "I'm excited. Coach (Darrell) Funk was definitely excited. I just called my grandma (who lives in Michigan) and she's super excited about it too."
At 6-foot-5, 285-pounds, the Michigan coaching staff is excited too. And they should be, considering Fox is a self described "meanest player you'll ever meet," as he displayed that mentality during his senior season at Ponderosa, where he helped guide his team to an undefeated regular season before losing in the second round of the state playoffs.
"I loved my senior year," Fox said. "I dominated everyone I went against. I was definitely at the top of my game all year long."
Fox, had his choice of schools to pick from, with offers from Colorado, Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan State to name a few. While he had a standout senior season, it ended on a sour note when he hurt his right knee to end his high school career.
"I have a torn ACL and a double torn meniscus on my left knee," Fox said. "It was the last game of the season. We were up by big. I was just running down field blocking a kid. I just twisted up on it weird and heard it pop three times. That's it."
Despite his injury, Fox still was named to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.
National recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman had this to say about Fox's game.
"He's a guy that you can look at him and talk to him and he's a really nice kid. But once he puts those pads on, he transforms into this angry guy. He is very nasty. He is a real physical kid. He won't play after the whistle but will play up until that whistle stops blowing. He's got more of that guard mentality. He would much rather scrape it up with defensive tackle then a speed guy on the edge. He's also very technically sound. He's very fundamentally sound. He has great bend. He's got great hand placement. He's not one of those guys that just uses his brute strength to knock a guy back."
Fox is a mauler in every sense of the word. His injury, though a setback, shouldn't keep him from developing too much this next year. He says he will come to Ann Arbor ready and in shape. He may be the most talented lineman Michigan signed in this year's class. Like most offensive lineman, Fox will most likely redshirt. He projects most likely at a guard position or could wind up playing center for the Wolverines. He should be a future starter on the offensive line for the Maize and Blue.
"I just want to get my rehab going," Fox said before he gets to campus. "get healthy as fast as I can, just hang out with all the guys, get to know my teammates, get to know my teachers and all that. Just get it going."
