His Recruiting Story
Jumping out as a top performer at the annual Maximum Exposure Combine in December of 2011, Hill's recruitment took off quickly. But as quickly as Hill received high level interest from college coaches and programs all over the country, his recruitment came to an abrupt and fast end when Brady Hoke and the Michigan Wolverines came calling with a scholarship offer in hand on February 6th, 2012, it was an offer he couldn't refuse according to his head coach Rod Oden.
"He got offered 20 minutes ago and he jumped on it right away," Oden said. "Michigan fan all his life. He said that if it ever came, there would be no reason to wait. He's comfortable here, he's a 4.0 student, so he was looking at the academics and he wanted to continue his relationship with Shane [Morris], a few of the other Cass guys he knows, and build that tradition together."
For Hill, his enthusiasm and brief but telling response says it all after making his commitment, the third commitment for the 2013 class, back in February.
"I feel great," said Hill. "There's a smile on my face. I'm cheesin'."
Visiting Ann Arbor and looking to get a better feel for what the program offered from a football and academic standpoint, Hill received news he wasn't expecting, delivered in a nonchalant style.
"I was in a meeting with Brady Hoke, talking about stuff, and he said, 'you know you have a full ride scholarship to Michigan,'" said Hill. "I was like 'huh what'd you just say?' I started smiling. It was great."
"[The Michigan coaches] were so ecstatic and happy," added Hill upon giving his commitment. "They were like, whoa really? They're happy for me. Brady Hoke gave me a big hug. I just got off the phone with Shane a couple minutes ago. He's going crazy right now."
Following up a strong junior campaign, Hill came out with something to prove as a senior at the newly coined East English Village Prep high school, continuing to progress and improve, putting up impressive numbers.
"Everything has improved, from my blocking -- it wasn't that good at the beginning of the season," said Hill. "But I worked on it every day in practice with my coach. Coach Oden helped with my blocking in practice as a player and my route running as a receiver. They got me all over the field now. I play receiver a lot now too. So my routes at receiver are better now as well."
Physical enough to play along the line as a traditional tight end but athletic enough to be an issue in the passing game along with his tremendous hands, Hill will undoubtedly be used in multiple ways throughout the offensive backfield under offensive coordinator Al Borges. As the tight end becomes more and more of a priority for the Wolverines, look for Hill to contribute if he makes the adjustment quick enough as a freshman. Hill is an ‘in between' type, but has the ability to far out perform his three-star ranking in college.
FOXSportsNEXT Midwest Recruiting Manager Allen Trieu had this to say on Hill's game:
"A stocky kid with surprising quickness and athleticism for his build. Very light on his feet, has great route running skills and ability to catch the ball as a tight end or H-Back. Soft, reliable hands and good run after the catch schools. Will have to learn to block potentially from the backfield as he may see time there in college. Not your traditional tight end at 6'3, but has the skills to be a matchup problem."
