His Recruiting Story

Playing in a power, run-oriented offense at nearby Novi Catholic Central high school, Wyatt Shallman is considered to be a freak of an athlete on the football field. After a strong sophomore season that provided Shallman with the exposure necessary to receive early recruiting attention, Michigan and Notre Dame were two of the first schools to jump into the mix in the spring prior to his junior campaign.

"Coach Martin [from Notre Dame] spent a lot of time at the school," his father John Shallman reported. "Coach Mattison [from Michigan] came in about an hour later. At the end of the school day, Coach Jackson [from Michigan] was in."

Not long after the Wolverine’s initial interest in Shallman, did Michigan really get this recruitment process going by being the first to offer the physically imposing athlete.

"I'm kind of stunned right now," said Shallman. "I can't believe this is happening to me."

"We were talking. Coach Hoke took us into his office. He just kind of slipped it in to conversation. He said, Wyatt, you have a full scholarship to the University of Michigan."

For the Shallman family, the scholarship offer brought out raw emotion.

"My mom cried,” said Shallman. “She's loved Michigan for so long. She's still crying. I'm excited for myself to accomplish this and also for my family, knowing how much they love Michigan."

Big time interest in Michigan, as well as a family of Wolverines, lead some to believe this recruitment could be a done deal sooner rather than later. But Shallman had other ideas. Letting the recruiting process take shape, Shallman also received offers from Michigan State, Ohio State and Notre Dame, among others, looking to give each school a fair shake to land his commitment. Taking visits to each of the schools listed above, Shallman continued to allow the process to develop before ultimately coming to a decision on February 18, 2012.

A decision that added Shallman to the commitment list in the class of 2013 at the University of Michigan.

"A lot of things went into it," said Shallman. "First, I want to say I'm very thankful to have had the chance to visit all these schools and be recruited by them. Thanks to all those coaches. They're all great guys, but we went down to Michigan about a week ago and I talked to Coach Jackson and we talked about things and it just felt right.”

“Michigan has always had that underlying feeling of being right. It's always been there. It's a great college, so I can't go wrong with it and I like the way they're putting things together."

GoBlueWolverine Commentary

Originally projected to be part of the big, physical back equation Michigan is looking to find and emphasize moving forward, Shallman is athletic enough and strong enough to possibly make the transition to defensive line in college. Starting off, Shallman will be given every opportunity to get on the field from the running back position, full back spot, and even H-back. As athletically gifted as Shallman is for his size, and possessing tremendous feet, the 6’3, 245-pounder could be the bruising lead blocker and runner necessary to compete in the Big Ten.

Below is an evaluation and future projection of Shallman from the FOXSportsNEXT team:

“Light on his feet for a big man, Shallman projects as a big tailback at times and a fullback at others. Is a good athlete who catches the ball out of the backfield well. Good lateral quickness and agility for a kid who's 245-lbs. Will need to continue to learn and improve as a blocker, but does a solid job in that department as well. Has dealt with some injuries in his career.”
