Signing Day Capsule: Jourdan Lewis

Cornerback, 5-foot-10, 165-pounds
Cass Tech (Detroit, Mich.)
National Rank: Four-star Prospect, No. 9 CB Overall
His Recruiting Story
Jourdan Lewis starred at Detroit Cass Tech, where Michigan has signed five players over the past two recruiting classes. And he may be the gem of the bunch, known for making plays, he is a lifelong Michigan fan and committed to the Wolverines last February.
“I am a bit of a gambler,” Lewis said in a October interview. “I just like to make that big play. I just want to have fun with the game. Sometime the gambling can affect (my game) you know what I am saying. So it’s just stay confident and just keep my technique, and play the game.”
At 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, Lewis was a two-way threat for Cass Tech and helped lead the Technicians’ to back-to-back Division-1 state championships—their first state titles in school history. While he was recruited to play cornerback for the Maize and Blue, he is open to the idea of suiting up at wide receiver.
“Of course, I love playing receiver,” Lewis said on playing wide receiver. “That’s what I started playing off in the beginning. But you know coach wants me to play defense. You know I just got to play defense.”
Lewis, showcased his man coverage ability at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl played last month in San Antonio, Texas. That’s where he was able to compete against some of the more talented and taller wide receivers in the country.
“They tried to pick on me cause I was kind of small or something. You know? I just had to come out here and prove myself. Which I did,” Lewis said during Army week practices.
His performance caught the attention of national recruiting analyst Greg Powers during Army week practices.
“I think he can be true cover corner, especially as he continues to add some size in his college strength and conditioning program. You saw Jourdan go up against the No. 1 wide receiver in the country in
and other guys like him, and lock them down in practice. If Jourdan Lewis is a listed at 5-fot-9, 160-pounds, then he is a legit player at that size and will only get bigger once he gets to college. As far as one of the better cornerbacks in the country, you could list Lewis up there with anybody in the country.”
Lewis is a pure athlete. He can flat out play football. He will cover your best player on defense. He will stretch the field on offense, especially with his play making ability as a wide receiver. He displays great hips and has a knack for knocking the ball out of receivers hands in coverage. While most freshman won’t see the field at Michigan, Lewis has a legit chanced to see the field early. He is an outstanding special team returner and could be paired with Denis Norfleet as a kick returner as a freshman. He will also will have a fair shot to get reps as a nickel or dime back on defense. It really depends on fast he learns the system, but Lewis will have a real good shot of contributing early in Ann Arbor.
As far as his next plan of action before Michigan, Lewis said he will run track and workout before heading off to school in last month’s interview at the Army game
“Just training, getting in shape, lefts some weights and that’s pretty much it for me right now.”
