His Recruiting Story
Detroit Cass Technical high school. A proverbial feeder school to the University of Michigan in recent years, Iowa is another Big Ten program that has had a lot of success in. Securing commitments from Laron Taylor and Ruben Lile, the Hawkeyes had a familiarity to build on at Cass Tech, and that cohesiveness, in addition to a terrific sell, convinced safety Delano Hill that Iowa was the place for him when he committed on April 14, 2012.
"They knew I was going to commit," said Hill of his former teammates. "I told them before we got here," said Hill. "They were really happy for me."
"It was the right thing to do. I felt comfortable with the players and the coaching staff and all. It's a family."
Though committed to Iowa, Hill continued to raise his national profile with strong performances at various camps including the NFTC in Columbus and The Opening all the way out in Beaverton, Oregon. Expanding on his strong play in the off-season, Hill and his 6'1, 185-pound speedy, physical style of play carried it onto the gridiron as a senior at Cass Tech, helping the Technicians win their second consecutive Division One state championship.
Not long after, the opportunity to join other former teammates such as Thomas Gordon, Delonte Hollowell and Terry Richardson at Michigan became real when the Wolverines extended a scholarship offer on December 12th.
"Delano just called me and he said, 'Coach, Michigan called and offered," said Cass Tech defensive coordinator Jermain Crowell. "They said they're coming down tomorrow.' I was like wow -- they're really serious. He asked me what did I think. He's big and fast -- that's what they need at Michigan."
Already with one teammate committed to Michigan in the 2013 class in cornerback Jourdan Lewis, as well as one time commitment and Michigan recruit David Dawson, Hill took a trip to Ann Arbor the following weekend to see what the Wolverines had to offer. As it turns out, Michigan was the right place for Hill who decided to switch his verbal pledge along with Dawson.
"I just had to see how it was up there, and once I did (the feeling) just kind of came over me," said Hill. "Then I just knew what to do. I think it was just a better fit for me academically and athletically. And having teammates there… it's always good to see some of the guys that you played with before… to know some of the guys you're going to play in college with. That was another factor."
A major selling point for Michigan in its pursuit of Hill was the ball hawking defensive back's ability to shift around between safety and corner, ultimately leading to the scholarship offer.
"At Cass Tech we play a lot of man to man coverage, so our safeties have to cover," said Hill. "So (the safeties) cover the slot a lot. And I've played corner. I try to be versatile and play every position in the defensive backfield. (Michigan) said I can play both, but they are going to start me off at corner."
Here's FOXSportsNEXT Midwest Recruiting Manager Allen Trieu's take on Hill:
"A good-sized safety and a sure tackler in the open field. Does a good job of diagnosing plays, finding the football and coming in under control when attacking ball carriers. In coverage, he can play over the tight end and slot and cover man to man or in zone. Continuing to improve his footwork and quickness will allow him to cover faster slot receivers in the future. Good overall ball skills and athleticism to go with his size."
