With his team set to play in the Division II state semifinals against New Albany Friday, Trotwood (OH) Madison LB, Michael McCray has tunnel vision these days. His athletic focus aimed almost entirely at helping his team secure another state title. Even so, Ohio’s Division II defensive player of the year can’t help but hear the constant rumors about the supposed flip he is supposed to make from Michigan to Ohio State is the coming weeks. A young Michigan fan had his say regarding the rumors when he saw McCray in Ann Arbor Saturday. After signing a number of autographs for Wolverine followers, the youngster who McCray estimates was seven or eight interjected with, “don’t go to Ohio State!”
That a rumor can pick up so much steam that even a seven year old knows about it isn’t that surprising in the social media age. The latest scuttlebutt has McCray flipping his commitment as soon as next weekend. The four-star linebacker laughs off such talk.
“I know (the rumor is out there),” he said. “That’s not true. They had called me but I didn’t call them. I talked to (an Ohio State assistant) and then my dad talked him and told him I wasn’t interested because I didn’t want to (be the one to) break his heart.”
At the same time, McCray stays in frequent contact with his future coaches in Ann Arbor, corresponds with future teammates when he gets a chance, and does a little recruiting for the Maize & Blue from time to time.
“I’ve been talking to Derrick Green,” he said. “I’m still working on it… trying to get (a commitment) out of him.”
