Kelly has timely interception in Division-2 district championship win

With the game tied 12-12 with under a minute remaining, Oak Park sophomore John Kelly intercepted a Southfield pass as the Blue Jays were driving for the winning score. Kelly’s key interception would force overtime, where the Knights would take the game 19-12 and secure a Division-2 district championship.

“We anticipated them passing the ball,” Kelly told GoBlueWolverine.com, “because they have been running the power I formation all game. But soon as I saw the ball in the air, I knew it was my time to make a play. I knew my team needed it.”

At 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, Kelly made his presence felt defensively all game. He finished the contest with eight tackles, an interception and a pass break up.

“I am just trying to be a versatile player," Kelly explained. “I’m trying to help my team to any type of victory that I can get. Before the game we was listening to speeches and pretty much we were talking about how we wanted success more than we wanted to breathe. And we just came out and executed.”

Next up, Oak Park (9-2) travels to Roosevelt (10-1) for Division-2 quarterfinal matchup. The kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.

With the Knights only two wins away from the state championship game at Ford Field, Kelly says his focus is just on his next opponent.

“Just one game at a time,” Kelly said. “We just trying to take it one game and eventually all the pieces going to fall into the puzzle.”

Recruiting

Currently, Kelly doesn’t have any offers but is generating interest from Michigan where he camped this past summer.

“Yeah I really haven’t talked to the coaches in a minute, but should be going to one of the games in two weeks,” Kelly said on a possible visit to Ann Arbor. “And my family really likes the school, so will think about that.

“I just want to go down there and see how everything is. I pretty much like the school (and) already know how it is.”

Kelly says he would also like to hear from Ohio State and SEC schools. He also noted that Arizona has been sending him interest letters.

With still two years of high school football ahead of him, Kelly said he will take his time with his decision process. He said a key part of his decision will be his family members opinion of the program.

“I pretty much going to go to school that my family likes you know,” Kelly said. “And if they’re will to let me play or not.”

While projected at a defensive back at the next level, Kelly who also plays running back for Oak Park said he will play whatever position gets him early playing time in college.

“It really doesn’t matter to me. As long as I get to help my team to a victory man, that’s all that counts.”
