Michigan’s offensive attack is as balanced as ever two games into the Big Ten season. Part of the reason for that is Denard Robinson leads the league in one key statistical category. Denard talks about it.
For the Michigan passing offense over the past two weeks, less has equated to more. With the Wolverines averaging 328.5 yards rushing through their first two games of Big Ten play, the passing attack has actually become more effective despite just 17 completions coming out of the hands of senior quarterback Denard Robinson.
“I think we’ve had success running ball,” said Robinson Monday. “And that’s the key right now. I think the offensive line is blocking well and that’s the key to us winning right now. We’re playing well and running the ball well.”
Really well.
Despite a large chunk of the rushing yardage coming from the legs of Robinson who has accounted for nearly 57% of that total in games against Purdue and Illinois, the added threat from the ground game has opened the passing game up which has lead to high percentage throws and the current distinction as the number one pass efficiency offense in the Big Ten.
One Wolverine looking to benefit from the balanced attack offensively is fifth-year senior wide receiver Roy Roundtree.
“Its going off the success of the offense,” said Robinson. “We have success running the ball so that’s what we’re doing a lot more. So when we start passing the ball he gets the ball and has made the most of it.”
“You get him the ball I’m pretty sure he’s going to make plays happen and we’re trying to get him the ball a little more,” added Robinson. “Whenever he gets open he’s going to get the ball.”
With the Wolverines dominating time of possession over the past two weeks, which head coach Brady Hoke reiterated Monday is of high priority, Michigan will look to continue the recent spike in production this week against a Michigan State defense that is still considered one of the conferences best and has been a difficult code to crack for Robinson in his two starts against the Spartans.
“It’s a great football team,” said Robinson. “They have great athletes and are well coached. We know every time we play against them we’ve got to be ready to play. We just got to play Michigan football. Last year we didn’t play Michigan football.”
The Spartans (4-3) head to the Big House Saturday looking to win their fifth straight against the Wolverines (4-2) for the first time in series history.
