New Orleans, LA -- 2012 Michigan signee Mitch McGary took his talents south last weekend to participate in the 2nd annual All-American Championship game at New Orleans Lakefront Arena. The five-star big man wasn’t alone on the trip, as his AAU teammate and future roommate at Michigan Glenn Robinson III made it down to the Bayou as well.
“Just being here is an honor and it’s very prestigious to be down here at the All-American Championship -- and to have Glenn with me and stuff -- you know, future teammates, and we’re like brothers already,” said McGary. "It’s pretty cool hanging out with him because I don’t usually get to see him because I go to a school out East. I wish we were on the same team but it’s just fun overall and we had a good time -- and I mean the East beat the West so I’m happy.”
McGary’s first time in New Orleans proved to be eventful, but isn’t exactly a destination the 6’10, 245 pounder could call home.
“I’ve never been down to New Orleans before, but my roommate at school now at Brewster is from New Orleans,” the future Wolverine stated. “He said it’s pretty cool and I just wanted to experience Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, where they took us tonight. We went to Margaritaville out to eat and it was pretty fun. Wewe walked around and saw some crazy stuff. It’d be cool for a few days but I don’t know if I could live here (laughing).”
Final Four weekend took over downtown New Orleans and there was no way of escaping the colors and pageantry of loyal basketball fans from the four teams left in the NCAA tournament.
“I’ve seen more Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State and Louisville things than New Orleans or I mean Louisiana or LSU stuff so it’s pretty crazy. But I’m glad to be a part of it,” said McGary.
With his college career set to begin June 25th, McGary hopes the next time he’s at the Final Four, it’s as a aprticipant.
“Hopefully next year with Glenn and Nick Stauskas and I coming in, and hopefully Trey Burke will stay and with Timmy Hardaway and Jordan Morgan, we’ll have a good crew next year and hopefully we’ll get things done,” said McGary.
