Wylie (TX)East WR. Marcell Ateman will be one of the top wideouts in attendance at the Nike Camp in Dallas, TX this weekend.  While there he hopes to haul in a few passes from Michigan commitment, Shane Morris.  GoBlueWolverine caught up with Ateman recently to discuss his prior interaction with Morris, his plans to visit Michigan, his decision timeline, and more.

Wylie (TX) WR, Marcell Ateman emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the class of 2013 last January after standout performances at both the Under Armour and Army All American Combines.  He plans to continue that trend during the Nike Football Training Camp in Dallas this weekend.  While there he hopes to aided in his attempt by connecting with one of the top signal callers in his class – one that happens to already be committed to Michigan.

“Shane Morris hit me up on Facebook one time and we just talked a little bit,” reported Ateman.  “Ever since then, he’s been hitting me up sometimes.  We’re going to see each other this weekend at the NIKE thing, so I’ll catch up with him again. I haven’t really gotten a chance to look at him play yet... I haven’t checked out his highlight or nothing like that.  Hopefully this weekend I’ll really get to check him out.”
If the two talented youngsters manage to develop any sort of chemistry, it would only serve to help a Wolverine recruiting effort that has already grabbed Ateman’s attention.

“They write me all the time,” he said regarding the Michigan coaching staff.  “They write me hand letters… all of them… all the different coaches.  I was actually planning on calling them tonight, just to catch up with them. I haven’t called them in a while, so I’m going to hit them up.”

“I like the whole tradition (at Michigan), and everything. They take pride in that.  The recruits… they’re going to come hard and show love. They all message me on Facebook. Michigan is a die-hard place. Just the atmosphere and everything about it, I like it. “

If/when he does make contact, one of the topics of discussion will be setting up a visit to Ann Arbor.

“We’ve got a lot of visits scheduled for spring games, so we’re just going to spread it out,” Ateman stated.  “We’re definitely heading up to Michigan to check it out.  My dad is talking about making it up for one of the spring practices or the spring game.”

There is a slight hint of urgency in Ateman’s visit plans.  He hopes to see as many as his suitors as possible in the coming months so he can move up his timeline should he deem it necessary.

“I know there have been a lot of commits to various schools,” he said.  “Once I start taking my visits and stuff like that, then really my time span (for making a decision) is going to close up. I’m going to start making my visits soon… then (continue taking them) into summer. Then it might be before my senior season that I make my decision.”

The four-star pass-catcher claims no favorites currently and insists he won’t start narrowing down his list until he sees more of what his suitors have to offer. In the meantime he is content to see what new offers come his way.  He’ll also pay close attention to the recruitment of his friend and teammate Quan Jones.  At one point the gifted wideout tandem was adamant about attending the same school.  However, as time has gone on they’ve apparently softened their stance a bit.

“A lot of different school are coming at us now,” Ateman explained.  “Some of them are starting to separate us.  That’s a difficult choice for us. It wouldn’t be bad for us (to play together in college) since we’ve played in high school and junior high together and stuff like that, but my choice is different from his. We’ll just have to roll with what’s best for us (individually).”
