If the Class of 2012 was the year of the linemen, both offensive and defensive,
the Class of 2013 is shaping up to be the year the quarterback makes a comeback.
Of the last four classes, only 2013 breaks 20 quarterbacks in the Scout
300 with
a whopping 29 signal callers in the Scout
300 this year.
The last several classes have been dominated by running quarterbacks, while
Major League Baseball has talked about how many great high school pitchers have
come out of high school during the same timeframe. It looks like some of those
big bodied throwers are making their way back to the gridiron, because there are
some big, athletic quarterbacks in this class led by No. 1 overall Max Browne
(6'5/200) of Skyline High School in Sammamish, Wash. and Tyrone Swoopes
(6'5/220) of Whiteright High School in Whiteright, Texas.
Browne is a prototype pro-style passer who stands tall in the pocket and can
deliver the ball to any spot on the field, while Swoopes is the running hybrid
quarterback that has dominated the top of the quarterback rankings in the past
few years. Browne has yet to make a commitment, but Swoopes chose Texas early in
the process.

If quarterbacks aren't the story in 2013, then the state of Georgia is. The
nation's top two prospects both hail from the Peach State. There was little
debate amongst the Scout team that defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche (6'4/270)
of Loganville, Ga. and linebacker Rueben Foster (6'1/240) of LaGrange, Ga. were
the top two prospects in the nation, but the order that they would be ranked was
a much more lively debate.
The superlatives flow easily for both players. Nkemdiche and Foster aren't just
plus size and speed, they're exceptionally big and fast. Nkemdiche actually
shows off his quickness and cutting ability playing running back reminiscent of
New York Giants big back Brandon Jacobs (6'4/260), and Foster lines up at
defensive end, linebacker, and running back for his Troup County team.
In the end, with two prospects virtually equal in the minds of the Scout team,
the nod went to the premium position of defensive line. Nkemdiche has the
ability to play defensive end, defensive tackle, or even linebacker on the next
level. For reference sake on which position is placed at a premium by football
personnel men, defensive linemen were drafted in the first round at a rate of
10-1 and 8-2 vs. linebackers in the last two NFL Drafts.
Needless to say, there's not much separating these two players, each falls into
the "best we've ever seen" discussion.
It's not just the top two in the Georgia though, defensive tackle Montravius Adams (6'3/285) of Vienna, Ga. shows incredible explosion off the ball and is
Scout's No. 1 defensive tackle in the nation. After having only one 5-Star
prospect in 2012, Georgia made a comeback in a big way with four so far in 2013
including Nkemdiche, Foster, Adams, and safety Vonn Bell (6'1/190) of Rossville,
Ga.
In the East region, Robert Foster (6'2/190) of Monaca, Pa. checks in as
Scout's No. 1 receiver. Foster is an exceptional athlete who also excels on the
defensive side of the ball. He has good size and the ability to take a short
pass and turn it into a big gainer.

Foster is joined by two other players from Pennsylvania in the 5-Star range
including tight end Adam Breneman (6'5/220), and offensive lineman Patrick Kugler (6'4/270). Breneman is a complete player who can dominate catching or
blocking, and Kugler is a road grader from his offensive tackle position.
It's no surprise that the state of Texas dominates the Midland rankings,
considering that it makes up more than 80% of the signees from that region and
is bigger than the Midwest and East for total number of signees per year. The two
top players from the Midlands are receiver Ricky Seals-Jones (6'5/215) of Sealy
and Swoopes. On the field, they look like carbon copies of one another with
their size and easy strides. Both have committed to Texas.
The Longhorns haven't totally wrapped up the state though as Texas A&M
received a commitment from another giant receiver in Derrick Griffin (6'6/215)
of Rosenburg. Griffin is a match up night mare who is only beginning to scratch
the surface of his potential. Should the top players in Texas decide to get
involved in a game of pickup basketball, they'd certainly look the part.
The Midwest is home of the nation's No. 1 running back in Ty Isaac (6'2/220) of
Joilet, Ill. Isaac is a big, powerful runner who has deceptive speed.

After a
lengthy debate by the Scout team on the nation's top running back, Isaac won a
split decision because of his combination of size, speed, and instincts.
Linebacker Jaylon Smith (6'3/225) of Fort Wayne, Ind. is Scout's No. 1 outside
linebacker prospect. He has tremendous quickness and great size and finishes
through plays.
There were two strong contenders for the No. 1 running back spot in the West in
the form of Justin Davis (6'1/195) of Stockton, Calif. and Thomas Tyner
(6'0/200) of Beaverton, Oreg. Davis and Tyner are both plus sized backs with
exceptional break away speed.

After having a plethora of Top 100 offensive tackle in 2012, Nico Falah
(6'5/270) of Bellflower, Calif. is the lone representative from the West in 2013
to crack the Top 100. Su'a Cravens (6'1/200) of Vista Murrieta made a strong
push for the top prospect in the West at either safety or outside linebacker and
finished No. 2 behind Max Browne.
Scout has currently ranked 500 prospects from around the nation and will push
that number to 750 next week as we make our way towards the 2000 college
prospects we rank every year. With spring evaluation period, summer camp season,
and senior seasons still to come, there will be a multitude of changes between
now and Signing Day next February, but these 500 young men have already shown
themselves to be high level college football prospects.
