Chandler Park Academy and Michigan commitment Derrick Walton went into Warren Fitzgerald high school Saturday night looking for a challenging game out of Flint Beecher and their star point guard Monte Morris.
What those in attendance received was nice performances by two of the best point guards in the state, but in very different ways.
Morris was the aggressor in this contest. The Beecher star clearly had something to prove after not receiving Walton jumped first at the scholarship offer Michigan placed in front of both of them last summer.
Morris attacked the basket all night finishing at the rim while also setting up teammates with easy layups.
Before leaving in the final minute with what appeared to be cramps in his right leg, Morris scored 32 to lead Beecher to a 77-68 victory.
Michigan commit Derrick Walton was impressive in spurts and helped key a late surge, but he never truly found a rhythm in the offense. Beecher at certain times played something similar to a box and one defense against Chandler Park to stymie Walton. Despite that attention the Wolverines future floor general managed to get into the lane – and subsequently to the free throw line all night.
Walton was able to knock down a few shots from the perimeter as well on his way to 24 points, but that wasn’t enough to get Chandler Park on this night.
