Michigan’s recruiting class for 2004 already has two commitments, and depending on the sequence of events the Wolverines may add another. The scholarship reduction by the NCAA leaves Michigan with 12 scholarship slots for each of the next four years. That means that there is currently one open slot for the 2004 incoming class (barring any attrition). GBW recently learned that the Michigan staff isn’t opposed to banking the final 2004 scholarship if one of the players that they currently covet is not available. That scenario might not be as undesirable as it may seem. If Michigan hears good news from Jerret Smith (which could come any day now), they would have no more open slots in 2005 if they use the last scholarship in 2004 (and there is no attrition). Check below for detailed roster projections, lists of commits/targets for the 2003-2005 classes, and links to all GBW stories on the listed players. For other network stories, click the player names.
This list will be updated regularly as new players are discovered and players already listed make their decisions. The link to the Primer will reside permanently in the Spotlight section at the bottom of the page.

Class of 2003 Commitments
Dion Harris SG
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 175 PPG: 22
High Schoo1: Redford HS (Detroit, MI)
Dion is one of the best all around players in the country. He scores, passes, rebounds, and defends. He will see time at the 1, the 2, and the 3 next season. Coach Charles Ramsey mentioned that Dion might be the best dribbler on the team next year, which should help him handle the backup PG duties he'll see next year. Harris can score in bunches when he’s on. Part of that is do to the extreme number of times he goes to the foul line. This kid is excellent from the stripe.

Brent Petway PF
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 195 PPG: 22
High School: Griffin HS (Griffin, GA)
Brent is an outstanding athlete that will bring an exciting brand of play to Michigan’s frontcourt. Michigan Assistant Coach Charles Ramsey called Brent “one of the best athletes I’ve every seen.” Petway recently ran a 10.9 100m at the Georgia State Track Meet.

Courtney Simms PF/C
Ht: 6-10 Wt: 225 PPG: 20
High School: Noble & Greenough(Dedham, MA)
Courtney is a shot blocker extraordinaire. This kid blew up last summer after his performance on the AAU circuit. He’s a great defensive player that has an improving offensive game. He was a presence in the Capital Classic all-star game. Coach Ramsey mentioned being impressed by the insistence by the coach of the East team to have Courtney on the court for defensive purposes during crunch time. This young man will challenge for playing time immediately.

Ronald Coleman SF
Ht: 6-7 Wt: 200 PPG: 18
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Romulus Senior HS (Romulus, MI)
Ron was Michigan’s first commit for the 2004 class. RC has one of the best strokes
in the entire midwest region. I witnessed him drain 10 straight threes in warm-ups
at the Nike MDC. He’s improving his off of the dribble game and will be a force
in the Big Ten for years to come. GBW will have more on RC very shortly.

Joe Crawford SG
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 205 PPG: 18
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Renaissance HS (Detroit, MI)
Joe Crawford is an explosive scorer that brings forth a dimension of athleticism not seen at Michigan in quite some time. Joe Joe can take opponents off the dribble and finish despite contact, or drain it from deep. Furthermore, he’s one of the most exciting dunkers that you’ll see. Mohamed Tangara PF/C
Ht: 6-9 Wt: 230 PPG: 12
AAU Team: Team Georgia Elite
High School Team: Mt Zion Christian Academy (Durham, NC)
UNC was once the big leader in Mohamed's recruitment, but the Tar Heels fell out of the running not long after the coaching change in Chapel Hill. Recent reports by both Tangara’s High School Coach (Antonio Fozard) and his AAU coach (Linzy Davis) have Louisville as the current leader for his services. Cardinal coach Rick Pitino has made a huge a push and has greatly impressed the young post prospect. However, Michigan is still recruiting this young man. Coaches’ Amaker and Ramsey watched him in action as recently as April at the Kingwood Classic. The Wolverines remain on his list of favorites.
Alexander Kaun C
Ht: 6-10 Wt: 240 PPG: 12
AAU Team: Nike Team Florida
High School: Florida Air Academy (Melbourne, FL)
The Russian big man blew up with impressive performances at the Boo Williams Tournament and The Kingwood Classic. Whole litanies of coaches have descended upon the Sunshine State to get some face time with this young man. In his first full season of AAU ball he has really improved his game, and thus garnered a lot of attention. I spoke with him at the Nike Memorial Day Classic and he mentioned that relationship with the coaching staff would be a huge factor in his decision. He also mentioned that he liked Tommy Amaker (whom made it a point to talk to the Siberian phenom. Michigan made his trimmed down list of seven schools recently. The others are Michigan State, Kansas, Duke, Florida, Florida State, and Georgetown. Look for Kaun to take his official visits in the fall. GBW will have more on Kaun in the coming days.

Ra’Sean Dickey PF
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 230 PPG: 16
AAU Team: S.C. Ravens
High School: Marlboro County(Bennettsville, SC)
Dickey had a bit of a tough time at the Nike MDC last weekend. He wasn’t on top of his game and was even T’d up at one point. Still, this is a big time talent that many of the high majors are after. UNC had been the leader for quite sometime. However, at the MDC last weekend he gave a top 3 of Maryland, Florida and Kentucky, with UNC and Auburn being other schools he’s interested in. He also cited a desire to play in the SEC or ACC. That account of where things stand currently didn’t seem to bode too well for Michigan. However, we have since learned from a well placed source that Dickey has been in contact with Michigan very recently and that he is a serious target for the Wolverines.

Al Horford PF/C
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 225 PPG: 18
AAU Team: Michigan Mustangs
High School: Grand Ledge HS (Grand Ledge, MI)
The son of former NBA player Tito Horford, Al is a fundamentally sound big man that sports an 86 inch wing span. He saw considerable attention from major programs toward the end of his high school season (including Michigan and Michigan State). He currently sports offers from Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State, Rutgers, Florida State, Valparaiso, Xavier, Central Michigan and Toledo. He’s expected to make an official visit to Michigan sometime in the late Spring/early fall and may receive an offer at that time. The Michigan Staff caught him in action this summer at the Kingwood Classic.

Cornelio Guibunda PF/C
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 210 PPG: 25
AAU Team: Connecticut Flame
High School: King & Low-Heywood Thomas School (Stamford, CT)
Originally from Mozambique, this young man is a relatively new name on the recruiting scene. His potential, however, has garnered a lot of attention. At the recent Bob Gibbons Tournament of champions his performance on the boards was described as “dominant.” He has known offers from BC, Vanderbilt, Miami, Villanova, and Rutgers. A few others like UCONN and Virginia are heavily courting him. Michigan has been mailing Guibunda consistently since the departure of his primary recruiter, Billy Schmidt....and the Wolverines remain a factor in his recruitment. Cornelio currently lists Virginia as his leader, but expect Michigan to move up should their interest intensify.

Jerret Smith PG
Ht: 6-1 Wt: 180
AAU Team: The Family
High School: John Glenn HS (Westland, MI)
Those whose opinions I respect have called Jerret Smith the top sophomore in the state. After seeing this young man play a half dozen times, I can certainly see why that opinion is held. I always come away impressed by what a floor general he is. Jerret is the quintessential pass first shoot second point guard and is not a player that observers would ever classify as selfish. He’s been hobbled this summer by a bad ankle but should be back close to full strength when he resumes AAU play next month. Officially visited Michigan again on May 29, and committed on June 4. Jerret is an excellent passer that sees the court really well. The young floor leader is a perfect complement to the wing talent Michigan has brought in already, and will be bringing in over the next few years.
