His Recruiting Story
While not as highly regarded as the other two names in Michigan's 2012 basketball class, Stauskas gained the nickname "White Chocolate" as a Canadian basketball phenom who took his talents to the New England region to become a more recognized name in recruiting. GoBlueWolverine first took notice of the young man in July of 2010 when posing the question as to whether the Maize and Blue would offer the young man.
"Coach Beilein has seen tape on me and he told me that I would be a good fit for his system with the style that I have," Stauskas said in that July, 2010 interview. "Coach Jeff Meyer has been to see me in person he was in Springfield, Mass. and Minneapolis, Minnesota this month to watch me play."
Shortly after that initial interview, Stauskas visited the Wolverines in an unofficial capacity, but while the visit didn't result in an immediate offer, it placed the Maize and Blue on a pedestal for Stauskas.
"The whole coaching staff was with me when I toured the campus to see what things are like," he said at the time. "Up there it was nice. Michigan's academic facilities are nice. My mom likes the focus they place on academics. It is a place where you could succeed."
"No I was not offered," he said. "Michigan said they would continue to recruit me and come and see me play. I am going to take a look at a few more schools and go from there. I really like the school. I could see myself going to the University of Michigan and fitting in up there. I have a good feeling about the City of Ann Arbor."
However, time continued to float by without much noise between Stauskas and Michigan, which prompted GBW to speak with the young man in February of 2011 to see if there was still any interest between the two.
"I just talked to Coach Beilein a couple weeks ago; I have also spoken with all the assistants as well -- they send me messages of Go Blue," Stauskas said at the time. "Coach Beilein talks to my dad and reminds us of why they want me to play at Michigan. I like the relationship we have and I like what he stands for and believes regarding basketball."
A month after inquiring if the interest was still there, as it was, Stauskas made his final decision by committing to the Wolverines and head man John Beilein.
Said Stauskas, "Yessir!! YOUR BOY IS GOING TO BE A WOLVERINE IN 2012!!! Thank you to all my friends and family for supporting me through the process. Making my dreams come true on step at a time. GO BLUE!"
"The last few days I've just been talking with my family and my coaches and we thought it was definitely the best thing for me," Stauskas explained. "I just can't go wrong with going to Michigan. Their style of play fits me, I have a great relationship with Coach Beilein and all of the other coaches, and it'll give me a great opportunity to come in and make an impact right away with Stu Douglass and Zack Novak leaving. It's just really a great situation all the way around for me. And it's close to home."
While the lowest ranked of the three 2012 Michigan basketball commits, Stauskas is no slouch himself, as he as well enjoyed the same meteoric type rise in the standings that both Robinson III and McGary enjoyed.
Evan Daniels, Scout.com's national recruiting analyst, wrote on Stauskas at a Reebok event in July 2011:
"Of all the campers, Stauskas was among the most productive during opening day of camp. His reputation is as a shooter, but he really is capable of doing more. He made a couple of plays in transition, had a pair of impressive baseline drives and showed the range of his jump shot. Michigan locked him up early and he appears to be a perfect fit for their offense and style of play."
He may not see as much as the court as his 2012 classmates, but he should provide great depth and may surprise some as he prepares to start his freshman year and sign his letter of intent for the Maize and Blue.
