Standifer Enjoying Recruiting Ride (Pt 2)

Anthony Standifer

Crete-Monee (Ill.) CB Anthony Standifer is happy about his recruiting success this far, but his mother may be even more so. She chatted with GoBlueWolverine about her son's recruitment, upcoming visits, what she wants to see in the college program her son ultimately picks, her thoughts on Michigan, and more.

Much like her son Anthony, Courtney Smith is both surprised and excited about the way her son's recruitment has taken off.  Slowly but surely the glow is starting wear off a bit, and the task of learning more about each suitor is about to commence.  One of her primary objectives is to see what these college coaches are really like.

"What I am most impressed with is how up front and personable the coaches are on these visits," she said.  "My priority on these visits is to listen to what they have to offer and then do my research on the schools that we visit."

Ms. Smith fancies herself as very quick learner so she is not at all intimidated by the things she may not know about the recruiting process.  That's why she won't hesitate to ask a lot of questions.  The goal is to be as informed as possible so she can aid her son in making the best possible decision.

At the same time, she understands that at the end of the day it is all about her son choosing the best college for him since he will have to be there four years. So she discusses with him about what is ahead for him with such a big decision on the horizon.

"The decision will be his at the end of the day," said Smith.  "I, his two grandmothers, one great grandmother, uncles, his high school coach and trainer will be a part of the decision, but he will make the final choice. Distance is certainly a factor for me -- I would prefer that he is a five to seven hour ride so I can get to him in a timely fashion if he really needs me. But whatever that decision is, I will be very supportive of Anthony and the college he attends."

Mother and son will finally be taking their long planned trip to Michigan tomorrow.  There a few very distinct things that she will be looking for.

"I want to know about the academic support that he will be given," she explained.  "I want to know about the study table… where it is and is everything in one building? I will be looking at the training staff and who will be taking care of him as a student and a player."

Numerous phone conversations with one Michigan staff member have already allowed to gain a degree of comfort with the idea of him molding her son.

"Coach (Jerry) Montgomery was straight up with me," Smith stated.  "I like him.  He was real with me -- he told me about the defensive back situation and where they were with scholarships. He was not pressuring us… just telling us the truth about the position they are in. I told Anthony we are going to take our time, but I thought he owed it to himself to at least go and visit and see what they are talking about."
