Scout's Take: Joe Bolden

Scout's Take: Joe Bolden

Michigan landed a commitment from Cincinnati Colerain (Ohio) linebacker Joe Bolden today. Scout.com takes a look at what the brings to the table.

Joe Bolden profile

Reviewed: Over 12 minutes of highlights, plus two full games.

Analysis: Bolden surprised me a little bit by what I saw on tape. Having met him in person, I can say he's a well built kid who looks every bit his listed 230-lbs. Watching him work in the weight room and talking to him, he's your throwback type linebacker.

What surprised me then, was that he actually came off as more of a finesse guy on tape than I expected. He runs sideline to sideline very well and makes a lot of plays in coverage. He does a great job dropping into zones and getting into passing lanes.

He's a smart, disciplined kid who stays at home and keeps contain. He did a particularly good job against option teams of staying disciplined and not overpursuing.

As a tackler, he can pack a punch. He makes strong initial contact, although I want to see him wrap up more in some cases. He also does a solid job of taking on and avoiding blocks, but I did see some room for improvement in these areas.

Bottom Line: Michigan got a good one here. He looks every bit the four-star on tape and he's a tough, smart kid who will be a great presence on the team. He's also, like I said above, a three-down linebacker, which is not necessarily what he is always billed to be.
