Top Ohio TE Talks Michigan Offer
Posted Feb 20, 2011
Big tight end Sam Grant from Cleveland area powerhouse Lakewood St. Edward High School caught up with GoBlueWolverine to talk about Michigan, his offer and if he’ll make it up to Ann Arbor.
, a 6’6” 230 pound tight end, hails from the Lakewood (OH) powerhouse, the St. Edward Eagles, who took home the 2010 state championship for the state of Ohio.
“I’m big, good sized, good at blocking and can catch some footballs,” Grant told
. “It was a team goal and we set out to win state and every aspect of the team was focused on that goal. Coach had us set up for like camps and for example we scrimmaged Massillon and he told us later we’d be there, and that’s how we started. We had our goal set and we just went and got it.”
Grant played a large role in helping the Eagles steam roll through their schedule.
“I thought I did really well my junior season. I had 16 catches for 252 yards 3 touchdowns and over 80 pancake blocks.”
A newer name to the recruiting circles, it hasn’t stopped Grant from adding several FBS offers, including the Wolverines.
“I got a late a start and I was five weeks behind the other guys as we had a 15 week season. Guys have a head start on me, but it was worth it to get more film out there. I currently have four offers, Michigan, Toledo, Boston College and Syracuse.”
The Maize and Blue offer certainly holds a lot of weight with Grant, for a number of reasons.
“It’s great to know a top program is interested in me,” Grant said of Michigan. “Especially as they are going back to a pro-style offense from what I hear. There’s a lot of tradition up there and not every place can say they play in front of 110,000 people every Saturday.”
Grant has a built in pipeline for Wolverine information in his high school coach who spent his college years playing ball in Ann Arbor.
“It’s a great and historic program. They have the most wins of any program in Division-1. My tight end coach, John Jaeckin, played there and he played at Ignatius. He’s always giving me updates on how they’re doing and he’s basically my pipeline of information from Michigan. I’d like to get up there for a junior day or a camp and learn more about the program.”
While there is definitely mutual interest between Grant and the Wolverines, there has been no official contact as of yet.
“I haven’t actually talked to any of the coaches yet, but I’m always watching videos and trying to learn as much as I can before all the contact starts.”
When the contact starts and a visit gets set, Grant has his eyes set on his big selling points.
“Some place obviously with good academics, and Michigan has great academics. Some place that I fit in well with the coaches and the football program. It’s basically the academics and coaching staff and distance are big factors for me.”
The Wolverines also offered two other Eagles in
. The three joke about being a package deal as well as giving another friend a hard time.
“We joke about it all the time (laughing). Another one of our buddies (
) is already committed to Ohio State. We always tease him if what if we go here. There are endless possibilities. It would be great to play with other players you’ve played with for four years and keep building that relationship and getting more wins on the next level, but we’ll see.”
A decision, however, isn’t imminent as Grant plans to do some homework and go through the process before anything is decided.
“I’ve only been to a few junior days so far, so I only really know about those programs. I don’t really know about a decision time or anything, I figure I’ll just know when I know.”
